Yellow – Color of the Soul

Yellow, the Color of the Soul, is the most abstract color, and very difficult to grasp for outsiders; many joke that if you understand Yellow sorcery, you do not understand it at all. Yellow deals with concepts, such as contracts, dreams, spirits, and more fundamentally, death. In that, it is often considered the counterpart of Green.

Yellow Flux is most common in areas touched by death, such as mass graves or battlefields. It is also found aplenty in temples or religious sites, bolstered by the faith of past generations. Key to Yellow Flux is the existence of the Astral, a spiritual layer of reality home to abstract spirits and the living’s collective unconscious. Yellow is mostly used to power soul-craft based magitech.

Its allied colors are Orange, Green and White, and it stands opposed to Violet.

Applications of Yellow sorcery:

— Soulcrafting

The art to manipulate the raw essence of souls. While the existence of souls is a proven scientific fact, souls hold many mysteries and confound researchers. The main consensus is that souls are an intangible, quantifiable essence unique to each individuals, the seat of their beliefs, memories, and personality. Souls are theorized to reincarnate after death, and to be the source of Sorcerer’s ability to cast spells. Soulcrafting can be used to animate matter by giving away a piece of soul, creating golems, or switch bodies; more infamously, it can be used to capture and trade souls.

— Necromancy

The first thing neophytes think about when they hear Yellow magic. Necromancy is a method of forcefully binding a soul to a dead body, reanimating it in a state of in-between called undeath (or, more positively, unlife). Every undead creature can eventually trace back their origin to a Yellow Sorcerer.

— Morphogeny

Often considered the most difficult Yellow skill to master, Morphogeny is about creating or summoning “Egregores,” spiritual entities composed of dreams and beliefs. Egregores are Flux entities without physical matter, who need to harvest Flux and belief to manifest into the world (or hijack bodies), but whose abilities are infinite and varied. Skilled sorcerers can often summon their own dreaming self into the physical world.

— Contracting

Contracting is about binding souls together, such as in inviolate contracts between two people, casting a curse on someone, or bestowing a sliver of their power toon an ally. Skilled contractors can even create supernatural laws which can affect an entire population.

— Dreamwalking

Often called astral projection, dreamwalking is all about projecting a part of the soul outside the body, either to travel through matter, reach the world of dreams, or wander the Astral. Dreamwalking is highly dangerous as the body remains powerless and easy to possess by malevolent entities.

Yellow Sorcerers

The cliche of the Yellow Sorcerer is the necromancer, a grim hooded figure wandering graveyards, raising the dead to serve them. Truthfully, while there is truth to this idea, most Yellow Sorcerers are benign, spiritual people. Due to their strong relationship to abstract concepts such as faith, they are more likely to turn to philosophy and art rather than conquest. Contractors also turn to lawmaking, enforcing the law or arbitrating deals for other parties.

Yellow Sorcerers are statistically overrepresented among the undead (more proof that sorcery is not a biological trait). Yellow Sorcerers are torn over them; some see the undead as abomination to put down to allow the soul to pass on, while others are more tolerant. On average, Yellow Sorcerers are very open to outside ideas and cultures, making them excellent diplomats.

The key to Yellow Sorcerers’ fighting style is confusion: since their magic is highly esoteric, few can predict its effects. Figuring out how the Yellow Sorcerer’s Spells even work is half the challenge when confronting them. While lacking the brute strength of the other colors, Yellow sorcery’s ability to attack a victim’s soul make it the most lethal magic in one on one combat. And death is often just the beginning of their foe’s eternal suffering.

Escalation: Luxuria: Tragically, Yellow Sorcerers almost always snap out of love or compassion. Either after misguidedly attempting to revive dead loved ones, or out of a desire to spare others greater pain, they come to believe that survival of the soul is more important than the body. In practicality, this means they either forcefully spread undeath (so nobody has to ‘die’), collect souls to ‘protect’ them, or recklessly contact dangerous entities. This moral bankruptcy then leads those sorcerers to hedonistic and depraved pursuits, as the lines of ethics grow blurred. While rarely intentionally malicious, these sorcerers can cause incredible damage, fueled by the unshakable belief that they are right and the world wrong.

Dot 2

Contract

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 2
Price: 6-10
Activation: Active, Voice, Mutual Consent.

The user can forge a magical contract with a partner, which include supernatural penalties when broken. The two contractors must agree to the terms of the oath and its penalties, which can include a variety of effects such as ill-luck or even death.

Arise

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 2
Price: 6-10
Activation: Active, Voice Vector

The user imbues corpses within earshot of the spell with the spark of unlife. The ‘risen’ lack souls or minds, but understand the caster’s orders and will try to carry them out to the best of their ability until destroyed. If the caster has a soul to fill the corpse with, such as a soul gem, they may create stronger, free-willed undead such as vampires or ghouls.

Soulcraft

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 2
Price: 6-10
Activation: Passive, Thought

The caster gains the ability to manipulate the raw essence of a soul, such as a ghost or soul gem. Besides allowing them to touch incorporeal beings, the caster can attach the soul to an anchor, such as a place, item, or corpse in conjunction with Arise.

Death Hand

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 2
Price: 6-10
Activation: Active, Direct Touch Vector

The caster’s touch damages soul on contact, allowing them to harm spirits and incorporeal beings; for the living and the undead, prolonged contact damages the link between the soul and the body, starting with memory loss, madness, eventually death.

Dreamweaver

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 2
Price: 6-10
Activation: Passive, App Switch.

The caster controls their own dreams, and through them can enter the collective unconscious linking all souls during sleep; only Yellow spells function within that dream world. Through the collective unconscious, the caster can then enter the unprotected dreamscape of someone else, asserting control of it. If two users of Dreamweaver meet, the one fighting in their own dreamscape is always dominant.

Dot 3

Tulpa

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 3
Price: 9-15
Activation: Active, Thought.

The user can project their own unconscious, symbolic “Shadow Demon” in the real world; the Tulpa embodies the host’s repressed desires, with abilities matching them (so suppressed anger will manifest as a fiery demon), and will act on them. The Tulpa consumes mental energy to manifest, creating fatigue in the host, but destruction only sends it back to the host’s subconscious.

Phylactery

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 3
Price: 9-15
Activation: Active, Item Vector.

The user ripes out their own soul and bind it to an item, a “phylactery,” becoming a special kind of undead known as a Lich. The soul can possess any corpse within fifteen meters of the phylactery, and will remain anchored to the world of the living so long as the item remains intact; the soul may also try to take over an undead being, ejecting the soul from its body if succeeding in a battle of will. Should the distance between the possessed corpse and the phylactery go beyond fifteen meters, the soul is automatically returned to the Phylactery. The choice of phylactery is permanent and cannot be undone.

Curse

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 3
Price: 9-15
Activation: Active, Direct Touch or Soul Vector

The caster puts a target under a curse, tainting their fate with supernatural penalties, from death to eternal slumber. However, the curse must have an exit clause which the target can take advantage of to lift the curse; the vaguer the specified penalties and exit, the less effective the Curse. The caster must physically touch the victim to try to curse them, although an astral projection may also work.

Astralself

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 3
Price: 9-15
Activation: Active, Thought.

The caster separates their soul from their body, turning their body comatose but allowing their soul to move and fly as a disembodied spirit. While unable to affect the physical world except by returning to their original body, the soul can still perceive it and cast Yellow Spells. Destruction of the soul will leave the corpse an empty shell, while death of the physical body will cause the soul to either pass on into the afterlife or become a ghost.

Soulbrand

Affinity: Yellow
Dot: 3
Price: 9-15
Activation: Active, Mutual Agreement.

The spellcaster marks a willing victim with a powerful magical brand binding them to their very soul; the brand manifests as a tattoo on the “vassal’s” body and soul. Supernatural creature will instantly recognize the marked entity as a vassal of the spellcaster. The spellcaster can possess the victim like a demonic spirit, allowing them to cast Yellow Spells through the vassal by using him as a living conduit for their own soul.
